Barcelona came into this one on the back of a 6-1 win over Alavés on Saturday, wanting to show their immense goalscoring form had returned in the Champions League as well, and a home win would take them a step closer to confirming their place in the knockout phase. Aston Villa arrived having won all three of their league-phase games, with the chance to cause a tremendous upset and keep their place in second, but Unai Emery, who faced Barcelona on his 55th birthday, had won just three of his 30 previous meetings with them as a manager.

A Gift From the Goal Kick
Barcelona took the lead on seven minutes, thanks to a decision-making error from Villa playing out. From a goal kick, Zion Suzuki chose the straight pass into João Gomes, who was being pressed touch-tight by Pedri, while Lamine Yamal and Raphinha were waiting close by to capitalise on any turnover. It came, and Yamal took his chance with a finesse shot into the far corner for 1-0.
Other than that one big chance, Barcelona didn’t unlock another in the first half. Their quick push-and-pull progression of the ball into the final third was met by a stubborn, compact and well-spread Villa mid-block, with Villa pressing high on Barcelona’s goal kicks so they kept a measure of pressure on the hosts. Having stopped most of Barcelona’s diagonal progression and attacking transitions, Villa recovered from the early setback and created some great chances of their own. Johan Manzambi had the clearest, in the centre of the box after Nicolas Jackson’s cutback on the transition, only to half-scuff his shot wide.
It was a feisty half too, with Ian Maatsen booked on 12 minutes for stopping a Barcelona attack, and Jackson and Raphinha both booked just before the break after a scuffle that started with Jackson’s heavy foul on Pau Cubarsí. It felt nicely balanced between a level game and Barcelona extending their lead, and Villa were in a sticky position at half-time: score the next goal, or concede it and probably lose. At the Camp Nou, against this Barcelona team, there is no way back once that happens.
Raphinha Finishes Them Off
Hansi Flick made a change at the break, Marc Bernal replacing Rodri, who had felt some muscle discomfort, and Barcelona’s man of the moment did the rest. On 52 minutes, Raphinha’s shot from Fermín’s pass took a deflection on its way past Suzuki for 2-0, and Emery responded with a triple change on 64 minutes, Ibrahim Mbaye, Ross Barkley and Leon Goretzka replacing Emi Buendía, Gomes and Manzambi.
Within a minute, it was 3-0, and it was a special goal. João Cancelo, from the left, produced his trademark trivela pass with the outside of his boot, into the area of uncertainty between the goalkeeper and the back line, and Raphinha ghosted in behind Pau Torres for a tap-in. Raphinha was replaced by Gabriel Jesus on 70 minutes, his job done, and Barcelona saw the game out comfortably.
What the Manager’s Said
Hansi Flick was most pleased with how his side defended. “This match was important. They are a great team, and we defended well,” he said. “We are happy with what we have seen in defence. The most important thing was to score those goals. We have been very compact and have defended very well in front of our goal.” On Rodri, he added: “He has felt some discomfort in his muscles and we have to wait until tomorrow. We have four days to recover.”
Unai Emery admitted the better side won, saying “Barça have been better, and we are a team in construction”, but he pointed to the moment it turned. “Barcelona took advantage of our mistake in building from the back. We look to draw opponents out to create space,” he said. “After the 1-0 we had chances to equalise, two clear shots at goal. Had we managed it, everything would have reset.” He insisted Villa would learn from it: “Our process will go through games like this. We want to be able to reach Champions League level. Today we played against one of the contenders, and we can draw conclusions.”
